What a roofing square is
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, a universal convention across the industry regardless of shingle type or manufacturer. Once you know your roof's area in square feet, whether from a direct measurement or from a tool like the Roof Area Calculator, dividing by 100 gives you squares, the unit suppliers and installers actually think and price in. This calculator accepts either an area in square feet or a squares figure directly, since not everyone starts from the same number.
Why three bundles per square is a default, not a rule
Three bundles per square is the long-standing convention for common 3-tab shingles and most architectural shingles, and it is a reasonable starting assumption if you have no other information. It is not a physical law. Bundle weight and coverage are set by each manufacturer and product line, and heavier architectural, designer, or specialty shingles sometimes cover a square in a different number of bundles than the standard three. The coverage per bundle is printed directly on the shingle wrapper, and that number, not a generic assumption, is what should go into an order. This calculator makes bundles per square an input you can change specifically so it stays accurate for whatever product you are actually buying, instead of quietly assuming one brand's numbers for every shingle on the market.
How waste allowance works
Raw squares from a roof area calculation is the theoretical minimum material with zero waste, a number no real installation hits. Cuts at hips, valleys, ridges, rakes, and around penetrations like vents and chimneys all produce offcuts that cannot be reused elsewhere on the roof. A simple gable roof with few cuts commonly uses around 10 percent waste, while roofs with more hips, valleys, dormers, or steep, harder to work pitches often need 15 to 20 percent or more. This calculator applies whatever waste percentage you set directly to your squares figure before converting to bundles, so the bundle count already reflects real-world cutting loss, not just the theoretical minimum.
Starter strip and ridge or hip cap allowances
Field bundles cover the main sloped roof area, but a complete shingle job also needs starter strip along the eaves, so the first course of shingles seals down properly instead of being vulnerable to wind and water at the edge, and ridge or hip cap shingles along every ridge and hip line. Both are sold separately from field shingles, often with different coverage per bundle. This calculator treats both as optional add-ons: toggle them on, enter your eave length or ridge and hip length along with the coverage per bundle printed on that specific product's wrapper, and the calculator adds the resulting bundle counts on top of the field bundle total for the final number to order.
Reading coverage off the wrapper
Every shingle product ships with its coverage stated on the wrapper, typically as square feet per bundle or bundles per square, sometimes alongside the total squares per pallet. That number is specific to the exact product and sometimes the exact color or texture variant, and it is the only fully correct figure to use, more reliable than any general assumption, including the default this calculator ships with. Treat the three bundles per square default here the same way you would treat a placeholder: useful for a rough estimate before you have a specific product picked out, but replace it with the real number the moment you do.
Worked example
Take a roof area of 1341.64 square feet, the same output a 40 by 30 foot footprint at a 6/12 pitch produces on the Roof Area Calculator. Dividing by 100 gives 13.4164 squares. Adding a 10 percent waste allowance brings that to 14.758 squares. At the default 3 bundles per square, that is 44.274 bundles, rounded up since you cannot buy a partial bundle, for 45 bundles to order. That is this calculator's default result, matching the same 40 by 30, 6/12 example used on the area calculator, so the two pages agree at the point where one hands off to the other.
